In October of 1894, Holmes rented a cottage in Irvington, then a suburb of Indianapolis. (Now a home at 5811 Julian Avenue rebuilt to look similar to its original design.) There detectives discovered child-sized teeth in a chimney as proof that young Howard Pitzel had been found
The cottage is also said to be haunted and a general hotbed for supernatural events. The owner reported that after buying the place, lights would blink on and off, apparitions would appear, and twice they’d become so terrified they’d fled the place.
